Ways to Identify a Faulty Water Heater

In many homes, water heaters are out of sight and out of mind until something major goes wrong, like leaks or a loss of hot water. However, there are other signs indicating that the water heater needs professional attention. This post will share three additional signs that can indicate the need for water heater repair, replacement, or maintenance.

High Utility Bills

bills One sign of a faulty water heater is rising utility costs. Water heaters are usually the second largest source of energy costs in most homes, and many problems with them can cause inefficiency and water heating costs to rise. Water heaters can lose efficiency when they are malfunctioning, old, or when maintenance is neglected.

A plumber can inspect the water heating system to identify the cause of inefficiency and higher costs and determine the best solution. If the system is nearing the end of its life expectancy, it can be replaced; if there’s an issue with the unit, it can be repaired; and if maintenance is needed, it can be performed to improve efficiency and keep energy costs low. One essential water heater maintenance task that helps it operate efficiently is to drain and flush sediment buildup from the tank.

Unusual Noises

sounds Noticing new and unusual noises from a water heater is another sign that it needs service. Under normal circumstances, a water heater shouldn’t make much noise and should operate pretty quietly. Hearing strange noises like hissing, banging, popping, whistling, and more can alert homeowners to an issue with their water heaters.

These sounds may be from excess sediment in the water heater, indicating maintenance is needed, too much pressure in the tank that requires adjusting the pressure relief valve, or other issues requiring repair. These sounds are an easy way to tell that the water heater needs attention.

Water Discoloration or a Strange Odor

As a water heater ages or maintenance is neglected, it can succumb to corrosion, which often requires replacing the water heater. When corrosion occurs in the tank or hot water piping near the water heater, the color and smell of the hot water can be affected. The water may turn a dull red color or appear cloudy and discolored and smell unusual and metallic.

Plumbers can inspect the water heater to determine whether it requires a water heater replacement or not. However, the best way to prevent corrosion and extend the lifespan of the water heater is with routine maintenance. The unit can be protected by flushing corrosive sediment from the water heater and replacing the anode rod when needed.
